Choice Makes Change.
The idea of “social contagion” in relationship to how heavily influenced our lives are by global corporate power, is both overwhelming and intriguing. Since anything can be “contagious”, practicing discernment, empowerment, and consideration for all of humanity is also a contagion that can influence health behaviors, and make for a brighter future. Learning how to flex this power so it spreads is the hard part. I remain optimistic knowing that the systems in place can be easily changed by the choices we make.
1) Transform our tastes—don’t eat processed food, eat slowly, prepare your own food, and savour it.
2) Eat locally and seasonally, when possible. We are in constant relationship with our environment, and benefit from eating the fresh foods grown near us.
3) Eat agroecologically—try to eat food grown in harmony with it’s local ecosystem. Learn about the climate in your local environment, and what grows easily, seasonally, is invasive and/or in abundance.
4) Support locally owned businesses. This is how we create, and have more choice!
5) All workers have the right to dignity —freedom to organize and work without persecution. Flex your rights.
6) Profound and comprehensive rural change —build rural areas with economic opportunities and a quality of life that attracts families.
7) Support for a sustainable architecture of food—rethink open space and sprawl as we develop. What is the point of a yard full of grass, and no edibles?
8) Advocate for Big Food rules and regulations- end subsidies to agribusiness, aggressively police their monopolies, and tax processed food to a level where it reflects the harm it does.
Just some thoughts… B.
