Nature Practice: Create a Sit Spot
Sit Spot is a nature-based therapeutic practice that involves returning to the same location multiple times to learn and notice how a specific environment changes and evolves over time, and how we relate to and are supported by nature for mental & emotional wellbeing.
Before you Begin
Pick a spot in nature: Pick any outdoor location away from distractions. Total practice time should be at least 30 minutes
Materials you’ll need: Journal, colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.
If you are picking a wild space, please take water, a snack, and take proper safety precautions.
The Practice
Identify if you are in a natural or built environment. Keep an open and curious mind.
Write down the wildlife you see?
Animals? Plants? Fungi? Insects? It’s okay to make up names if you’re unsure. This should be fun and relaxing.
How does it feel to be in this place? How does your body feel? mind? emotions?
Orient towards the environment you’re emerged in
Lay on the ground and observe what is around (local Native American practice described to me).
First, lay on stomach. What do you see moving on the ground? What colors do you notice? What textures? Do you notice a temperature?
Now, laying on back. What sounds do you hear? What has your attention most?
Lastly, what can you offer loving kindness to?
Spend a few minutes writing and/or drawing about this experience. Bring question home to research. Work with plants growing in this area.
I am curious how you feel mentally and emotionally. What changed in the mind and body? What is one lesson or gem of wisdom you want to take with you?
